EECC Benchmark Study for UHF Tags – Using CISC RFID tag performance measurement technology for 10 years
The EECC is doing this worldwide most extensive report, initially together with the Metro Group, DHL and GS1 Germany for 10 years now. Since the begin they are relaying on CISC RFID measurement technique and knowledge that has since then be continuously advanced. “The CISC RFID measurement knowledge already available in 2006 was a great boost at the begin of our effort.” said EECC Manager Conrad von Bonin and continuous “Using the technology we have significantly enhanced our knowledge and the work we are doing. Applying the measurement technology developments over the years, we are continuously using the technology provided by CISC. It provides the flexibility that is required to address the market requirements and in particular those for the European region, where we need the capabilities to adjust the measurement equipment for European regulations and Dense Reader Mode requirements to meet the settings of the applications in Europe. This is only sufficiently provided by CISC measurement equipment. ”
The EECC is setup in Neuss, Germany and provides in its 3 Innovation Labs all available RFID and EPCIS services, see www.eecc.info. The UHF Tag Performance Survey report is part of the EECC Research program in cooperation with European industries and institutes that explores technical and business future capabilities.

CISC RFID Xplorer supports E.M Microelectronic in the development of next generation RFID ICs and tags.
EM Microelectronic is a semiconductor manufacturer specialized in the design and production of ultra-low power, low voltage integrated circuits for battery-operated and field-powered applications in consumer, automotive and industrial areas. EM has 40 years’ experience in the design of IC processing analog and digital signals simultaneously.
Their product portfolio includes RFID circuits, smart cards ICs, ultra-low power microcontrollers, power management, LCD drivers and displays, sensor and opto-electronic ICs, mixed-mode arrays and standard analog ICs.
Over the last few years EM has used CISC RFID Xplorer in the development of their RFID ICs and measuring the performance of the tags on different items. Xplorer is a compact high-precision RFID test instrument used to measure performance of RFID devices and application setups, verify conformance and support the development of readers, tags and ICs. Xplorer offers tools to support chip design verification with extensive test capabilities covering tag access test such as read/write memory test, timing measurement and response strength test over frequencies and power levels making it a preferred tool for IC manufacturers around the world.
Yves-Alain Gubler [Field Application Engineer RFID] from EM Microelectronic says; “Xplorer has shortened our new product development time. With the freed up resources we can now concentrate on the development of new products to satisfy our customer needs and stay ahead of competition. This makes us one of the leading manufacturer of RFID ICs around the world.” He further adds that; “Xplorer is handy and can be carried to our research facility and customer locations across different geographic locations. Our association with CISC also brings about the vast knowledge that CISC has in the field of RFID conformance and performance testing. This supports our product development process and helps mitigate our risks. CISC’s knowledge into current and future protocols also helps EM to have access to all protocol related information as and when required.”
Xplorer is also used by EM for the measurement of the performance of the tags at various stages of its development. A detailed report is generated to compare and analyze the performance of the tags after tagging it on different items. He further adds “Our customers receive detailed reports about the performance of the tag whether it’s on an item or after integration of our IC in their tag. With the help of Xplorer we measure the different tags to select the best performing tag.
CISC RFID Xplorer is used by Tönnjes E.A.S.T for the global deployment of RFID vehicle registration and identification systems
J.H. Tönnjes E.A.S.T. GmbH & Co. KG is a leading global supplier of security license plates as well as vehicle registration and identification systems. The Tönnjes Group with its export companies focuses on the customer-specific development of international vehicle registration systems for protecting the vehicle registration as well as subsequent identification of the “national vehicle fleet” against attempts at manipulation, counterfeiting and theft. Tönnjes E.A.S.T. also offers consultancy on modern counterfeit and tamper-proof vehicle registration and identification systems including high-security license plates.
Tönnjes E.A.S.T. has innovative products in the portfolio and invented the IDePLATE® with an integrated RFID tag in the metal of the license plate to identify vehicles by passing RFID reader portals. Embedding a tag in the metal license plate is challenging as the performance of the tag depends significantly on where the tag is placed and the antenna design of the tag. Tönnjes E.A.S.T. developed an innovative solution where the license plate functions as antenna by utilizing a slot-antenna layout.
CISC RFID Xplorer is used by the Tönnjes E.A.S.T. R&D team to measure and verify the performance of these tags on the IDePLATE® in order to achieve 100% read rates by passing the reader portal. Mr. Dennis Brandwein, Technical Manager at Tönnjes E.A.S.T., says: “Xplorer is a very versatile tool used by our team in-house to measure the performance of tags we design. Accuracy and reliability are keys to the success of our products. Xplorer helps us to verify the accuracy, we require for our RFID tags. It can measure all the key performance metrics of a RFID tag. Data can be presented in a user-friendly format which is used by our team either for further analysis or presenting the information to potential clients.”
For further information about the IDePLATE®, please contact Nicole S. Fuhs, PR & Marketing Manager. www.toennjes.com
Dennis Brandwein further adds: “Our RFID tags achieve high read rates as we not only rely on the performance of the tag. We also analyze the performance of the RFID tag into the interaction in the presence of a reader in the environment. The Sniffer module of Xplorer helps us to achieve this. Sniffer is a tool to analyze RFID reader and tag signals. It lets user trigger on specific reader commands and further analyze the tag responses at this trigger.” With this feature, Tönnjes E.A.S.T. optimized anticollision of the tags and improves the overall speed at which the tags are readable. Sniffer is also used to evaluate their own software, which is being used in different IDePLATE®-RFID deployment projects around the world.
tagItron RFID Systems is using CISC RFID Xplorer for UHF RFID testing for LEX certification
As a renowned provider of RFID solutions to the textile and automotive industries, tagItron offers a broad range of RFID-related products including labels, read-write units, antennas, systems and software solutions for any work environment. TagItron Auto-ID technology and solutions are used on a variety of products and in many industries. For tagItron, the textile service / laundry sector is one of the most exciting fields and the most important markets for the future in addition to the logistics sector and especially c-logistics. From a technical few the transponder always stands at the beginning of each process chain. Already with this an installation can stand or fall. Not all transponders are the same. The different transponders currently available in the market show the full range of price / performance. A recent study (LEX Certification), commissioned by tagItron, documents this through process testing and RF surveying. As a manufacturer of the well-known “HardTags”, which are used in a variety of known and available laundry transponders, thanks to the RFID Xplorer of CISC Semiconductors that provides the corresponding know-how in the development and performance measurement of transponders. Just attaching the transponder, whether patching, sewing or riveting, as well as the position of the attachment in the textile and the type of textile itself can already decide on the success or failure of the use of RFID. tagItron as a “single source supporter” already helps customers with this first step towards Industrie 4.0 with comprehensive process know-how, a portfolio of transponders that are adapted to a variety of processes and different materials. “Transponder-System is the first inevitable step to the overall system, “says Jan Wendisch, Managing Director & Head of TextileID tagItron GmbH. “With the CISC RFID Xplorer system tagItron can already draw conclusions on the resonance frequency and range of the transponder in the application of the customer during the development phase of transponders and thus has a tool in hand, that ensures that the system integration from the beginning on the fitting transponder.” Josef Preishuber-Pflügl, Business Manager RFID + NFC CISC Semiconductor GmbH: “As UHF RFID measurement technology vendor, as well as the head of the ISO Group for the development of RFID test standards, I am very pleased that our measurement knowledge supports the success of RFID applications.”
